Next-Gen Pediatric Pain Care: Building Adaptive and Scalable Solutions Across Care Settings

Description of Symposium: Pediatric pain remains poorly prioritized, recognized, and managed across all contexts, with under-resourced areas often most impacted. In the symposium, we will provide an overview of novel evidence-based strategies that can be utilized across contexts and populations. Speakers will include clinicians and researchers across multiple disciplines. Presentations will be interactive and highly focused on ensuring attendees leave with clinically adaptable, scalable, ‘practice-ready’, pain care strategies that can be easily implemented in both high and low resource areas. Inclusion of families in the development and implementation of pain strategies is critically important, and presenters will provide concrete ways they have involved patients and families. Topics will encompass multiple types of pain and across the developmental span from infants to adolescents. Examples include parent-led procedural pain care, needle-related pain care, utilization of accessible virtual reality interventions for procedural and chronic pain care, as well as perioperative management. The panel will engage the audience in a discussion on ways to collaborate to ensure equitable pain care for infants, children and adolescents across settings.

Laura E. Simons, PhD is a Professor in the Department of Anesthesiology, Perioperative, and Pain Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and a clinical psychologist at Stanford Children’s Health. Her research applies a pain neuroscience psychology framework to elucidate the brain, behavioral, and social mechanisms that shape chronic pain in youth and to translate these discoveries into personalized, mechanistically informed care. Integrating digital health, wearable technology, and co-design with patients and families, her work advances real-time tracking, patient partnership, and precision approaches to improve access and outcomes for children with chronic pain.

Dr. Angela Yeo KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital
Singapore

Dr Angela Yeo is a paediatric anaesthesiologist and paediatric pain physician at KK Women's and Children's Hospital, Singapore. After completing her fellowship at the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne, she has led the development of paediatric pain services across Southeast Asia, establishing Asia's first interdisciplinary chronic pain clinic for children and guiding her institution to become the first outside North America to achieve ChildKind International certification.

Her clinical and research interests focus on improving paediatric perioperative pain management and preventing the transition from acute to chronic pain through evidence-based, multidisciplinary care. Dr Yeo is a Councillor of the Pain in Childhood Special Interest Group of the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP), founded the ASEAPS Paediatric Pain Network and the Asian Society of Paediatric Anaesthesiologists Paediatric Pain Special Interest Group, and co-developed the paediatric module of the internationally recognised Essential Pain Management programme. She is passionate about advancing paediatric pain education, fostering regional collaboration, and improving pain outcomes for children across Asia.

Professor Marsha Campbell-Yeo, a neonatal nurse practitioner and clinician scientist, is a Full Professor at the School of Nursing, Faculty of Health, Dalhousie University and IWK Health, in Halifax Nova Scotia, Canada. Her Canada Foundation of Innovation funded research lab, MOM-LINC (Mechanisms, Outcome and Mobilization of Maternally Led Interventions to Improve Newborn Care) focuses on examining interventions to improve outcomes of medically at-risk newborns specifically related to pain, stress, and neurodevelopment as well as novel knowledge synthesis and dissemination methods, and digital e-heath interventions aimed at enhancing parental presence and active engagement in care.

Professor Campbell-Yeo has been recognized for her contributions to the field via numerous awards. In 2023, she was the recipient of the Canada Research Individual Leadership and Advocacy Award and the Dalhousie University Distinguished Researcher Award. In 2022, she received an Honorary Doctorate from the Faculty of Medicine and Science from Orebro University, Sweden. She was invited as a member of the Royal Society of Canada's College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists, the recipient of the Inaugural Dalhousie University President's Award for research excellence and was named one of 150 Nurses championing innovation in health for Canada by the Canadian Nurses Association to mark the 150th anniversary of Confederation (2017). She is a Canadian Institute of Health Research New Investigator Awardee, the Canadian Pain Society Early Career Awardee, and a Career Development Awardee of the Canadian Child Health Clinician Scientist Program (2015).

She is the President of the Pain in Childhood Special Interest Group and Council member of the International Association for the Study of Pain, a board member and Director of Research and Innovation for the Council of International Neonatal Nurses, a board member of the Canadian Neonatal Network and Canadian Neonatal Foundation, and the Inaugural Chair of the Canadian Premature Babies Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee and Inaugural co-chair of the Canadian EPIQ Family Engagement Quality Improvement Initiative.
