641: Knowledge and Attitudes Regarding Pain Management Among Nurses at Siriraj Hospital, Thailand
Topic: Education, Societal Impact, and Others
Subtopic: Education of pain care
Background and Aims: Nurses are frontline healthcare professionals who assess patients’ pain throughout hospitalization and play a central role in implementing pain management plans. Therefore, adequate pain knowledge and positive attitudes among nurses are essential for effective pain assessment and management. However, knowledge gaps may persist despite increasing educational resources. This study evaluated nurses’ knowledge and attitudes regarding pain assessment and management using the Thai Knowledge and Attitudes Survey Regarding Pain (Thai-KASRP) among nurses at Siriraj Hospital, a tertiary care center in Thailand, and identified factors associated with higher scores.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among registered nurses at Siriraj Hospital, a tertiary care hospital in Thailand, between May 2025 and January 2026. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Univariable analyses were performed using independent-samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation, and Kruskal–Wallis tests, as appropriate. Significant overall group differences were followed by post hoc pairwise comparisons using the Games–Howell or Tukey test, as appropriate. Multiple linear regression analysis was used to identify factors independently associated with higher Thai-KASRP scores.
Results: A total of 460 inpatient care nurses in Siriraj Hospital . The mean age was 35.3 ± 9.4 years, and most participants were female. The mean Thai-KASRP score was moderate at 63.39% ± 9.39% , with only 4.6% scoring above 80%. In univariable analyses, higher scores were significantly associated with age > 40 years (p = 0.040), longer work experience (p < 0.001), department, particularly in the Anesthesia and Palliative units (p < 0.001), and prior pain education (p < 0.001). In multivariable analysis, department (p < 0.001) and prior pain education (p = 0.001) remained independently associated with higher Thai-KASRP scores \. The largest interdepartmental difference was observed between Anesthesia and Post-Anesthetic Care Unit (14.18%). Participants with prior pain education had significantly higher scores than those without prior training; however, no significant difference was found between those trained within ≤12 months and >12 months.
Conclusions: Pain knowledge and attitudes among nurses at Siriraj Hospital were moderate, with few participants achieving high competency scores. Department and prior pain education were the strongest independent correlates of higher Thai-KASRP scores. These findings support regular annual pain education programs and targeted interventions for lower-performing departments and commonly misunderstood topics to strengthen pain management practice.
