347: Effectiveness of Kinesiology Taping in the Rehabilitation of Children with Osgood-Schlatter Disease
Topic: Clinical Science
Subtopic: Non-specific to any diagnosis, Non-pharmacological treatments, Physiotherapy, Treatment/management
Background and Aims: Osgood-Schlatter disease (OSD) is a common condition affecting children between the ages of 10 and 18, especially those who are active in sports. Approximately 10% of children aged 12 to 15 experience OSD, with the prevalence rising to as much as 20% among adolescent athletes. The condition is mainly characterized by pain, noticeable swelling, and deformity of the tibial tuberosity, often resulting in gait abnormalities and a decrease in physical activity.
Aim: To evaluate the effectiveness of taping in the rehabilitation of patients with OSD.
Methods: The study involved 76 patients diagnosed with OSD, who were divided into two equal groups: a study group (n=38) and a control group (n=38). All patients participated in a 35-day supervised physiotherapy program. The study group received a combination of vastus medialis oblique (VMO) strengthening and stretching exercises, ultrasound therapy for 15 days, and kinesiology taping. In contrast, the control group followed the same exercise with ultrasound therapy.
Results: In the clinical study, there were no statistically significant differences between the study group and the control group (p > 0.05). However, after 35 days of intensive treatment, both groups showed a positive response in reducing swelling and pain in the tibial tubercle. Comparatively, the study group achieved better results in reducing swelling, pain, and rehabilitative outcome than the control group.
Conclusions: Kinesiology taping has a mild positive effect on the physiotherapeutic outcomes during the rehabilitation of children with OSD. However, to draw definitive conclusions, further high-quality randomised controlled trials are necessary.
