625: Applying the KAP Model in Holistic Nursing for HZN Treatment with Spinal Cord Stimulation
Topic: Education, Societal Impact, and Others
Subtopic: Education of pain care
Background and Aims: This study explores the effectiveness of the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice (KAP) model in providing comprehensive nursing care for patients with herpes zoster neuralgia (HZN) who have undergone short-term spinal cord stimulation (st-SCS).
Methods: Fifty-two patients diagnosed with HZN and undergoing st-SCS were non-randomly assigned to an intervention group (n=26) or a control group (n=26). The control group received routine nursing care, while the intervention group received KAP-based holistic nursing care, spanning from admission to electrode implantation, discharge, and removal. The intervention included disease education, psychological support, and hands-on training, supplemented by online consultations and communication via the WeChat platform. Pain interference, self-care ability, and quality of life (QoL) were assessed using validated scales.
Results: Post-intervention, both groups showed significant reductions in pain interference scores (p<0.001), with no significant between-group differences (p>0.05). However, the intervention group demonstrated significantly higher scores in self-care ability, including self-concept, self-care responsibility, self-care skills, and health knowledge (p<0.001), with significant group×time interactions (p<0.05). Additionally, the intervention group reported significantly higher QoL scores in physical functioning (p=0.007), though no significant differences were observed in physical role, emotional role, or social functioning (p>0.05).
Conclusions: Holistic nursing care based on the KAP model significantly enhances self-care abilities and improves physical functioning in HZN patients undergoing st-SCS. The integration of the KAP model with digital tools, such as WeChat, provides a low-cost, scalable solution for chronic pain management, particularly in resource-limited settings.
