Emiko Senba, MD, PhD, "Exercise Therapy for Chronic Pain: Basic Science and Clinical Practice "
Description of topic:
1. Chronic Pain uses different brain system than Acute Pain. 2. Patients with chronic pain have behavioral disorders. 3. The mesocortico-limbic system is dysfunctional in the brain of chronic pain patients. 4. Exercise is the first-line treatment for chronic pain because it normalizes the function of mesocortico-limbic system. 5. In fact, exercise therapy altered functional connectivity in the limbic system and EEG activity improving clinical symptoms in fibromyalgia patients.

Emiko Senba is a neuroanatomist and pain researcher, and a former professor of Anatomy at Wakayama Medical University. After retiring, she joined the university’s Department of Rehabilitation Medicine to investigate the brain mechanisms underlying the effects of exercise therapy for chronic pain.
Her research using a mouse model of neuropathic pain showed that two weeks of wheel running induced hypoalgesia by activating ventral tegmental area dopamine neurons, which are typically deactivated in sedentary chronic pain models. This demonstrated that exercise normalizes the dysfunctional mesocortico-limbic system—a key driver of persistent pain and pain-related depression. Furthermore, Senba and her team confirmed that exercise therapy restores normal EEG activity and mesocortico-limbic function in patients with fibromyalgia.
